The programme and the Certificate of Competency offered to the students will be as per the requirements of and under the seal of approval of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) & be completed in 3 stages.
STAGE I
PRE SEA TRAINING PROGRAMME
This will comprise 4 months training provided by academy.
The training during this time will cover the following subjects:
- English Language & Standard Marine Communication Phrases;
- General Ship Knowledge and Safety;
- Monitor Compliance with Legislative Requirements;
- Plan and Conduct a Passage and Determine Position;
- Electronic Aids to Navigation;
- Safe Working Practices aboard merchant ships;
- Seamanship; and
- Watch-keeping and Collision Regulations
In addition, the Stage I of this course will also include the four modular courses as required by STCW ’95 namely:
- Personal Survival Techniques;
- Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting;
- Elementary First Aid; and
- Personal Safety and Social Responsibility.
Issuance of CDC:
The trainees undergoing this program will be issued a Liberian CDC on course completion.
STAGE II
ON-BOARD TRAINING PROGRAMME
Students will complete 24 months of shipboard training, which will include at least 6 months of bridge duties
in a capacity that fully understudies the officer of the watch.
a) During this period, the student’s will complete:
- An ISF (or similar) Training Record Book.
- A Task and Guided Study Program (TAGS) offered by Australian Maritime College.
b) A preparatory correspondence course (Distance Learning Program) covering the following subjects:
- Cargo Work
- Celestial Navigation
- Stability
- Terrestrial Navigation
STAGE III
CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCY CLASS 3 DECK (CLASS 3 COC)
Students will attend college in Australian Maritime College (AMC), Launceston Campus, Tasmania, Australia for 8 months. During this time, they will continue their studies in the required subjects and would complete all of the
assessment required for issue of a Certificate of Competency.
Students would also complete the training necessary for the following courses:
- Global Maritime Distress and Safety System
- Advanced Fire Fighting
- Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boat
- RADAR ARPA
- Medical First Aid
Course ware and Teaching Material
Academy shall provide all the courseware and teaching material for Stage I & II.
Issue of Certificates
- At the completion of Stage I Award of Pre-Sea Training for Deck Cadets to students having successfully ompleted Stage I of the programme.
- At the completion of Stage II, Award of Certificate of Completion of TAGS (Tasks and Guided Study Program) to all students who have successfully completed the TAGS Assignments.
- At the completion of the Stage III of this programme, including all assessments and mandatory/other courses, the student shall be issued issued with Diploma of Applied Science (Deck Watchkeeper), leading to the Watchkeeper (Deck) Certificate of Competency, by AMSA.
Minimum Entry Requirement
The minimum educational qualification is “A” level and its equivalent (10+2 years of formal study), within the following streams: Minimum of 50% Aggregate in 10+2 and English Minimum 50% in 10+2 or IELTS 5.5, with Science (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics), or Commerce (with Mathematics) Age - 16-25 years.
Medical and Eye Sight requirements shall be as per the existing standards of AMSA.
